The Association of British Insurers has called for a minimum one-year probationary period for all learner drivers, and restrictions on the number of passengers young drivers can carry.
It points out that motorists aged 18 cause 50 collisions every day – nearly three times as many as drivers in their fifties.
We agree whole heartedly with this initiative, however don’t feel it should be aimed just at young drivers.
Perhaps it is all age related, I don’t know, but I guess it like anything, the more you do it, the better you get, so perhaps the initiative should be rolled out to anyone who first passes their test, irrespective of age? Whilst a youngster has all the bravado and belief in their abilities (that might lead them into an accident), a dopey old 57 year old like myself has much slower reactions yet I believe I know best, so perhaps I pose a threat also.
Maybe the ABI survey should look at first time drivers in their 50’s, as it’s obvious anyone, irrespective of age, will improve with experience.
That said, the “green P” plates should be law for your first 12 months, just like the rookie cross in motorsport, irrespective of your age.
