Volkswagen to Introduce a Budget Brand within 2 Years
Despite owning a number of brands, such as Audi, Seat & Skoda, the VW Group are to add another brand to their portfolio, aimed at the bottom end of the market to rival brands such as Renault’s Dacia which arrives in the UK later this year.
How times have changed, because in days gone past, Skoda was the cheap brand, followed closely by the Spanish SEAT’s that we used to hire on holiday on the Costa Brava, but both of these have been re-positioned over the years by VW, with Skoda now a quality brand and SEAT, billed as the youthful sporty brand.
Not much information is around about the budget basement VW’s or even what brand name they are going to be called, but the cars will be aimed primarily at China and India, but Europe will get the cars as well. The only comment that does seem to have come from VW is that they are going to build a ‘simple’ saloon from £4,800, an estate for £5,600 and an MPV for £6,400.
It’s expected the cars will be built in China and India and be based upon Polo or Golf platforms? Whilst there has been no public go on this, it’s anticipated that VW will make the final decisions before the end of the year and that cars could be being built as early as late 2014 (by which time I guess the prices of everything would have gone up?).
