OK, it might just be a £5 increase, but it represents a 10% increase as the governments “First Registration Fee” amount increases to £55 from April 2008, but never the less, with around 2.3 million plus vehicles likely to be registered in 2008, its another 11 million quid or so that going to be tucked into the Chancellors back pocket.
Originally, there was no fee, but in 1998, it was introduced and started life at £25, but with successive rises, its seen it more than double in just 10 years.
Whilst I realise it’s a one off fee, there is no getting away from the fact that in a full year, based on the 2.3 million plus registrations, its going to be another £128 million pounds the motorist has sloshed into the Treasury.
