Well we all got excited about the European Car of the Year, then look what happened; they gave it to a car that wasn’t even for sale anywhere in Europe at the time the award was given.
Anyway, more excitement on the horizon as a group of 50 motoring journalists from around the world have come up with a short-list for “The World Car Of The Year” and from that, they will pick a winner, which will be announced at the New York Motor Show in April this year.
Amongst the finalists are the Audi A4, BMW 7 Series, Fiat 500, Nissan GTR, Jaguar XF, Ford Fiesta, Honda Jazz, Mazda 6, Toyota iQ, Citroen C5 and the Volkswagen Golf Mk6
Along with the overall winner, they will announce “World Performance Car Of The Year, the “World Car Design of the Year” and “World Green Car” (bet you can’t wait).
Canada are pretty close to the states, but see things just a tad differently when it comes to selecting the Canadian Car of the Year and the three finalists for Canada are Mazda 6, Hyundai Genesis, and the Toyota Corolla and there is no mention of any green awards, but there is a “Utility Vehicle” award and in the running for that is the Mercedes M-Class and the Subaru Forester. Canadian Journos will announce their winners at the Toronto Motor show in March.
I can understand car makers wanting to grab one of these motoring ‘Oscars’ but I wonder if they ever actually convince anyone to go out and buy one, particularly when you look back at the cars that have won these awards in the past, as I wouldn’t say they’ve been the most astute choices.
