“Why Aye Man”. It’s 25 Years for Nissan.
Seems like only yesterday when Japanese car maker Nissan opened its manufacturing plant in Sunderland, but 25 years have passed from September 8th 1986 when the first UK built Nissan Bluebird rolled out of the factory, to be followed by 5,139 in the first year of production.
Well, it’s been a positive 25 years and Nissan and its staff have done a fantastic job and witnessed the plant grow to become the UK’s biggest car plant and largest car exporter and build over 6.2 million vehicles, even exporting vehicles to Japan and as far afield as Australia.
Twelve different models have been built at the plant since 1986 and 2010 saw 423,262 cars roll off the production line.
A new lithium-ion battery plant commences production in the new year and when added to the investment in building the Nissan Leaf all electric car planned for next year and then the new generation Qashqai which will also be designed in the UK, will see Nissan’s total investment in Sunderland hit £3.3 billion pounds.
Its nice to hear a good news story for a change and deservedly so, as the British workforce have delivered first class quality products and in return, Nissan have shown their commitment and created a great partnership that delivers for everyone concerned.
