Road Safety Charity Wants Proposed 80MPH Limit Scrapped
Unsurprisingly, road safety charity Brake is calling for the proposed increase in the motorway speed limit from 70mph to 80mph to be scrapped.
Brake claim that evidence shows that 80mph limits would cause more people to be killed and seriously injured on our motorways and for good measure and to strengthen their argument, they are trying to enlist “green” support by saying the 80mph limit will create more Co2.
Whilst you kind of wonder where the evidence comes from, I guess it’s irrelevant as it seems that following a comment from the Transport Minister (who ever he might be this week) that “safety is paramount when it comes to managing speed on the country’s road network”, it’s clearly unlikely that the changes will take place now.
Funny though, whilst it seems that evidence can be used to support some claims, when it comes to the topic of the 80mph limit reducing journey times, Brake say “it remains unclear whether increasing the speed limit would lead to a significant reduction in journey times”. Shame that.
