Whilst we have never heard of Planet 4×4 Magazine, its always nice to win something and in recent test by Planet 4×4, the third incarnation of the Discovery has been named by the magazine as the “Britain’s most practical 4×4”
In the tests, the Discovery 3 scored 93 points out of 100 (pretty impressive) and beat off Nissan Pathfinder, Audi Q7, Lexus RX and Mercedes GL amongst others to take the award.
John Edwards, Land Rovers UK Managing Director said “This is a great achievement for the Discovery, which has proved time and time again it is three cars in one. It has now won nearly 100 awards since launch in 2004, making it one of the most decorated SUVs ever,”
Testers from Planet 4×4 crawled all over the 38 vehicles in the test and examined every last detail of what makes a car easy to live with and the magazines Editor, Alan Kidd has said “This is probably the most intensive scrutiny a group of 4×4’s has ever been put under”
“There are some incredibly clever packaging solutions out there – but nothing beat Discovery 3. From its handy double glove box to its brilliant seat-folding system, it sets the standard for load carrying and does a proper job of taking seven fully grown adults. It’s a perfectly executed example of how a vehicle’s interior should be, and richly deserves the title of Britain’s Most Practical 4×4.”
From our experience here at BVL, its clear that people don’t always buy the most practical, the cheapest, the most powerful, or what people say is the best, they simply buy what they like or what they can afford.
Land Rover Discovery has always been way up on the wish list for drivers and even way back in the dark days when the early Discoveries were hugely unreliable and being honest were pretty awful things, we would find customers after having had one for 3 unreliable years, would at the end of the contract hire period be placing the order for their next one.
It’s a funny old world, and whilst we believe there are better 4×4’s out there than the Discovery, it’s clear that the Discovery remains the people choice. Whilst it’s great to win things and have people say nice things about your product, it does not matter for Discovery 3 as we are going to buy it anyway.
