It’s a strange place for a report to come from, but the University of South Florida’s College of Public Health, say that traffic light cameras cause crashes rather than protect motorists, by provoking drivers into making abrupt sudden stops.
Well any sensible motorist knows that’s the case, its only the Government who seem not to, I guess being prepared to accept a few traffic light rear end shunts to avoid the more dangerous accidents caused by running a red light.
The report says that engineering improvements that address the visibility of the signals themselves and the timings of signals should be able to reflect traffic flows and even wet roads and that this would prevent red light running.
The study added that traffic fatalities caused by red-light running account for less than 4% of Florida’s yearly traffic deaths, while road injury rates have dropped 33% in nine years, without widespread camera use.
I wonder if our transport bod’s ever read these reports?
