Most of us hate road signs, but in fact, many of us don’t notice them anymore as we just become oblivious to them.
So maybe that’s why Transport Minister “Rosie Winterton” has embarked on a review of our current signage with the aim being to by using the latest technology to help cut down congestion and emissions and to get us all moving around safely and efficiently.
The Minister is calling on car drivers, cyclists, pedestrians and road organisations to tell her how we think our streets should look and she has also promised to provide local authorities with power to de-clutter our streets and remove out of date signs.
Most of the UK’s signage is up to 40 years old and things have changed a lot since then and with new technology, it’s possible to provide better information such as up to date travel information.
We all know how confusing some signage can be and that approaching a mass of signs; we really don’t know what to look at first and purely in terms of safety, that can’t be a good thing.
Don’t hold your breath though, as the review does not take place until the middle of 2009, but one wonders that if we still have a female Transport Minister by then, if we will end up with Trinny & Susannah or Gok being asked to design them.
